Providing EAP to youth and
adults with a special interest in providing mental health services
to people experiencing the affects of crime, crisis, trauma, and other
issues that may put them at risk..
"You facilitated the learning
process in a fun and extremely effective way. I would never have believed
the horses could have provided such tremendous insight. I am stunned
by the clarity this therapy provides
and look forward to learning more. It's uncanny how the truth comes
out." ~ Client, Adult
No prior knowledge of horses is necessary as EAP
has nothing to do with horsemanship or riding.

In EAP, a licensed therapist and an equine professional, certified
to provide EAP by the Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association
(EAGALA), involve horses in experiential activities on the ground in
a nonthreatening way. This technique is highly effective because horses
have a keen awareness of body language and will mirror the feelings
and intentions of others in their environment. They provide a neutral
medium for transference, capture and hold attention, rapidly break down
defense barriers, provide immediate, honest, nonjudgmental feedback
and magnificently reflect the inherent beauty of life itself.

The impact of experiencing behaviors that result in success during
the activities with the horses make an immediate and lasting impression
that can be carried over to daily life. All therapy activities
revolve around one to eight horses and are conducted by a licensed therapist
and an equine professional on the property of Stable-Spirit. Every activity
is designed in a way that requires clients to apply certain skills as
well as opportunities for transference and empowerment. Because of its
intensity and effectiveness, it is considered a short-term, or "brief"
approach to therapy.
Individual Therapy
Individual sessions last 1 - 1.5 hours and are conducted on an as needed

sometimes less.
Group Therapy
EAP groups consist of 6-9 individuals who are similarly aged and have
similar issues. Activities are designed to meet the objectives of the
groups predetermined focus. This could be an issue listed in the bullets
above, or any other mental health issue that the therapist determines
needs to be address. Each group generally lasts 1.5 - 2 hours and is
conducted once a week for six to eight weeks.
Family Therapy
Family therapy focuses on the dynamic's of the family in relation to
the issues of the client. Sessions are conducted with the client and
other individuals who are identified as being members of the client's
family and who are deemed appropriate to be included in the family therapy
session by the therapist. Family therapy sessions last 1.5 hours and
may be conducted on a one-time only basis, or on an ongoing weekly or

EAP taught me that I can do anything with my life today -- I can live
a sober and clean life and be a happy person. ~ Client, Adult
My EAP experience taught me I can be a leader and not just a follower.
~ Client, Adult
EAP taught me that I can stay focused on one goal and move forward
with it. Just because cocaine may present itself doesn't mean I have
to use. ~ Client, Adult
EAP showed me that I can be in control of my own thoughts and I can
be focused if I really want to be. ~ Client, Adult
We truely feel that we got more out of our one session and conversation
with y'all than we have with all the other doctors our son has been
to. ~ Client's Parents
It (my experiences with the horses) taught me to respect people and
have a better attitude. ~ Client, Age 15
EAP taught me that the horses mirror my feelings and can show me things
that maybe I was unconsciously feeling and I didn't know it. They also
help calm you. ~ Client, Teen
I learned that I lack confidence in myself when approaching new situations.
By allowing myself to accept the possibility of failure and learn from
my mistakes, I can become more self-assured in all my endeavors, new
and old. Yes, all that from a horse!! ~ Client, Young Adult
My EAP experience taught me I have literally boxed myself into a corner
and allow the expectations of others to use up the little energy or
self value that I have. That in turn causes my depression. ~ Client,
Adult
The horses taught me I need to follow my instincts more often instead
of being afraid to act on them. ~ Client, Young Adult
The thing that impresses me most about EAP is that uncanny things
happen with the horses that are greater than anything I could have imagined.
It's like God uses them as messengers. ~ Facilitator
I never realized the healing power of a horse. ~ Observer
The person to horse interaction provided through EAP stimulates an
increased awareness of feelings and motivations both for the "focus
person" and the observers. ~ Observer
As an observer, I felt that the therapist and horse professional
did a good job of seeing to my safety and comfort when engaging with
or being near the horses. ~ Observer
